Selvamani Selvaraj’s retro thriller Kaantha, featuring Dulquer Salmaan, Bhagyashri Borse, Samuthirakani, and Rana Daggubati, is set to stream on Netflix shortly after its theatrical release on November 14. Fans can now catch the film from the comfort of their homes starting December 12. The movie will be available in multiple languages, including Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, and Malayalam, and will be titled Shaantha in Kannada. Netflix described the film as “A masterpiece, a mentor, and a murder. When pride turns into revenge, who will break first?”
Kaantha is a period mystery set in 1950s Madras, directed by Selvamani Selvaraj and co-written by Thamizh Prabha. The film was produced under the banners of Spirit Media and Wayfarer Films by Dulquer Salmaan and Rana Daggubati. Dulquer Salmaan plays Thiruchengode Kalidasa Mahadevan, popularly known as TKM, a superstar who finds himself in a bitter clash with his former mentor Ayya, portrayed by Samuthirakani, while working together on a horror film. Their rivalry escalates further when a mysterious death occurs on the film set, making both men prime suspects. Bhagyashri Borse appears as Kumari, a budding actress navigating her way through the chaotic film industry, while Rana Daggubati plays the role of Inspector Phoenix, tasked with investigating the unfolding drama.
The film had a successful theatrical run, collecting ₹35.36 crore worldwide. While Kaantha received mixed reviews, critics widely praised the performances, especially Dulquer Salmaan’s portrayal of TKM, noting his ability to shine even in a film with uneven storytelling. Audience reactions on social media highlighted excitement for the OTT release, with fans eager to rewatch the film or see Bhagyashri Borse’s standout performance.
Following a trend in Tamil and Telugu cinema, the film’s transition to OTT comes about three to four weeks after its theatrical release, giving fans a quick opportunity to enjoy it online. Netflix’s multi-language release ensures that viewers across different regions can experience the story, with the Kannada version titled Shaantha catering to a wider audience.
Kaantha blends mystery, period drama, and psychological tension, exploring themes of ego, revenge, and ambition within the glamorous yet ruthless film industry. Its intriguing storyline, set against the backdrop of 1950s Madras, combined with strong performances from the lead cast, makes it a must-watch for thriller enthusiasts.
