Japanese Court Ready to Announce Verdict in Abe Assassination Case

A pivotal ruling will be announced today by a Japanese court regarding Tetsuya Yamagami, who stands accused of killing former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. This verdict follows a devastating event that not only stunned Japan but reverberated across the globe.

At the age of 45, Yamagami was apprehended at the site in July 2022 after fatally shooting Abe with a homemade weapon while the ex-PM delivered a campaign speech in Nara. Abe, aged 67 at the time, succumbed to his injuries shortly after.

Though Abe was not in office when he was assassinated, he continued to wield significant influence in Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP). His death resulted in a leadership crisis, leading to instability within the party, a series of leadership elections, and ongoing transitions among prime ministers.

Abe’s tenure spanned a total of 3,188 days across two terms, marking him as Japan's longest-serving prime minister. He departed from his role in September 2020 due to health complications.

The assassination brought to light persistent connections between the LDP and the Unification Church, an organization often labeled a cult. Investigations post-assassination revealed that more than 100 lawmakers had ties to this group, causing a significant erosion of public trust and a drop in support for the LDP.

Reportedly, Yamagami voiced profound resentment towards the Unification Church, stemming from his family’s financial struggles due to his mother’s substantial donations. He targeted Abe because the former leader had previously sent a video message to an event associated with the church.

Founded in South Korea in 1954, the Unification Church is recognized for its mass wedding ceremonies and heavily relies on donations from Japanese adherents.

During an initial court session in October at the Nara District Court, Yamagami confessed to the killing, indicating a guilty verdict is virtually a foregone conclusion. Today’s ruling will primarily address the severity of his punishment.

Prosecutors are seeking life imprisonment, labeling the act as an “extremely grave” and unprecedented occurrence in post-war Japan. The defense, however, argues for a lesser sentence of no more than 20 years, citing the emotional and financial trauma that Yamagami’s family has endured.

Despite controversy in his own country, Abe held considerable international sway and maintained a close relationship with former U.S. President Donald Trump. He was the first foreign leader to engage with Trump following his election, with their relationship being notably strong.

Japan's current Prime Minister, Sanae Takaichi, who is seen as a political protégé of Abe, frequently references their shared ties with Trump in her diplomatic activities.
