Injury Strikes Again: Jofra Archer Out of Ashes Series

Post by : Bianca Hayes

England’s struggles in the Ashes series have taken another significant hit, with fast bowler Jofra Archer ruled out for the remainder of the contest following a side injury. This marks a premature end to his Test comeback and leaves the team further weakened while already facing a 3-0 deficit.

The 30-year-old will miss the fourth Test set for Boxing Day at the Melbourne Cricket Ground as well as the final encounter in Sydney. Archer is expected to return to the UK post-Melbourne for further evaluation regarding his fitness for the upcoming T20 World Cup scheduled in India and Sri Lanka.

Bright Spot Amidst Adversity

Despite the team's difficulties, Archer has stood out, taking nine wickets across three Tests and even scoring a vital half-century during the third Test held in Adelaide. His five-wicket haul of 5-53 in Australia’s first innings marked a notable return to form for the bowler after a six-year gap without such a performance.

Regrettably, his availability dwindled when he bowled only 12.4 overs in Australia’s second innings. Scans performed in Melbourne on Tuesday confirmed the side strain that has officially ruled him out.

Adjustments Ahead of Fourth Test

In Archer’s absence, England will welcome Gus Atkinson into the playing XI, alongside a key modification in their batting lineup. Ollie Pope has been dropped due to a tough run, paving the way for Jacob Bethell to step in.

Pope’s highest score this tour has been 46, which extends his frustrating streak of eight Ashes Tests without reaching fifty. His performance has sharply declined since his century against India at Headingley last July, averaging just over 24 in seven Tests, prompting selectors to make a change as England aims to salvage some honor late in the series.

A Chance for Bethell

22-year-old Bethell showed promise in his debut Test in New Zealand last year, racking up three half-centuries from three matches. While he had limited first-class chances since, his recent score of 71 for England Lions against Australia A in Brisbane has bolstered his claim for selection.

Earlier in the tour, speculation about Pope’s spot intensified, more so after he lost the vice-captaincy when the squad was unveiled. His exclusion now marks his first drop from the Test side since 2022.

Praise From Captain Stokes

England captain Ben Stokes commended Archer's contributions, recognizing his valuable return after being sidelined by injuries for an extended period.

“His effort over these three games has been outstanding,” Stokes remarked. “He faced numerous questions prior to this tour and has answered them through sheer determination for the team.”

Bowling Depth Depleted

With Mark Wood also out of action, England's bowling unit faces further strain. Surrey pacer Matthew Fisher has been called up, yet there are no plans to add another fast bowler to the squad despite the ongoing challenges.

Interestingly, off-spinner Shoaib Bashir remains omitted as England maintains their current squad balance, even with conditions likely to favor spin in the upcoming matches.

England's XI for the Fourth Ashes Test

Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Jacob Bethell, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ben Stokes (capt), Jamie Smith, Will Jacks, Gus Atkinson, Brydon Carse, Josh Tongue.

With victory now out of reach in the Ashes, England must regroup amid injuries and rising criticism, striving to restore morale and competitiveness as they confront the series' concluding Tests.
