Japan's Defence Strategy Under Scrutiny as Threats Escalate

In light of escalating regional tensions, Sanae Takaichi has initiated a comprehensive assessment of Japan's defence and security policies. This initiative is a response to the growing military assertiveness from nations such as China, North Korea, and Russia.

The Japanese administration has established a 15-member expert panel comprising professionals in the fields of diplomacy, defence, and economics. Their task is to review Japan's security strategy and propose enhancements to bolster the nation’s military readiness against evolving global threats.

Prime Minister Takaichi remarked that the landscape of global security has undergone substantial changes. She pointed out that the stable international order that prevailed after the Cold War is now in doubt, compelling Japan to evolve in response to a more unpredictable geopolitical environment.

The focus of this review includes adapting Japan's military capabilities for contemporary warfare, incorporating advanced technologies like drones. The government anticipates that future conflicts may be prolonged and intricate, necessitating enhanced defence capabilities and more effective strategic planning.

In a notable policy transformation, Japan has recently lifted the ban on exporting lethal weapons. This strategic shift permits the expansion of its defence industry and enhances collaboration with global allies, notably the United States. However, this decision has faced backlash from pacifist factions within Japan and criticism from China.

Japan has committed to elevating its defence expenditure to 2 percent of its GDP by the year 2027, equating to around 43 trillion yen. This target has been reached sooner than initially expected, prompting the new panel to assess the necessity for further increases.

Analysts believe this review signifies a major transformation in Japan's post-war defence stance. As international tensions rise, Japan is gearing up for a more proactive military role to safeguard national security and maintain stability in the region.
