Release of Jana Nayagan Postponed as Madras High Court Halts Censorship Approval

In a significant blow to eagerly anticipated film Jana Nayagan, the Madras High Court on Tuesday reversed a previous ruling that instructed the Censor Board to provide a censor certificate for the movie. As a result, the film's release has been pushed back further.

The court noted that the lower court should have allowed the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) ample time to respond prior to issuing the certificate. Consequently, Jana Nayagan cannot be screened in cinemas until it obtains formal approval from the CBFC.

A new hearing regarding the certificate is set to take place shortly at the Madras High Court. On January 20, the court had already reserved its judgment and planned to announce the outcome today, January 27.

Publicized as Vijay’s final film before a full-time political career, Jana Nayagan was originally slated for a world premiere on January 9, just ahead of the Pongal festival. However, days prior to the release, the Censor Board forwarded the film to a revising committee following a lodged complaint.

The film’s producers, KVN Productions, sought intervention from the Madras High Court, which initially ordered the Censor Board to issue a UA certificate following some modifications. However, this decision was contested, leading a two-judge bench to stay the initial ruling and postpone the case to January 21, after the Pongal celebrations.

In light of these developments, KVN Productions sought urgent recourse from the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court heard the appeal on January 15 but ultimately dismissed it, referring the matter back to the Madras High Court for further examination.

Directed by H. Vinoth, Jana Nayagan features Vijay alongside Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Mamitha Baiju, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Prakash Raj, Narain, and Priyamani.

Fans are eagerly awaiting the film's launch, yet the official clearance from the Censor Board remains unresolved, contributing to the delay of this much-anticipated release.
