Jaishankar in the UAE: Key Talks on Energy Security

Dr. S. Jaishankar, India’s External Affairs Minister, has touched down in the UAE, marking a crucial visit as the first by an Indian minister since the onset of the Iran-related conflict. This trip focuses on bolstering India’s energy security in light of escalating geopolitical strains.

The timing coincides with Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri’s ongoing negotiations in Qatar, where India aims to secure additional LNG supplies following production challenges due to tensions at the Strait of Hormuz. Currently, Qatar is instrumental in India’s energy landscape, contributing about 4% of total LNG imports.

Earlier this week, during the Indian Ocean Conference in Mauritius, Jaishankar underscored India’s commitment to establishing a government-to-government accord for oil and gas supplies with Mauritius, further positioning India as a vital player in regional energy security.

Jaishankar's visit is particularly significant as it occurs amid delicate diplomatic relations, with India attempting to navigate the complicated dynamics of West Asia. He has addressed the notion that there is no comprehensive agreement with Iran regarding safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz, clarifying some recent speculations affecting Indian energy routes.

This visit also seeks to enhance diplomatic communications within the region, as indirect discussions between Iran and the US continue in an effort to lower tensions. Moreover, ensuring the safety and welfare of Indian expatriates in the UAE has become increasingly important, especially after flight cancellations left many stranded.

While in the UAE, Jaishankar plans to engage in talks with Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan and other high-ranking officials, focusing on energy collaboration, regional stability, and the well-being of the Indian diaspora.

This visit follows a series of recent high-level meetings between India and the UAE, including the brief trip of UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to India, further underscoring the continuous strengthening of bilateral relations.
