As he recovers in the hospital from a successful hernia surgery, Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro has officially endorsed his son, Flavio Bolsonaro, for a presidential run in 2026. His support came in a letter read outside the hospital in Brasilia.
Doctors confirmed that the surgery was a success, and Bolsonaro is expected to be hospitalized for five to seven days during his recovery.
Bolsonaro, who is currently serving a 27-year prison term related to coup planning linked to the last election, was granted temporary medical leave with permission from Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes. Strict security measures are in place, including police presence outside his room and a ban on electronic devices.
In the letter, Bolsonaro emphasized the importance of his son’s candidacy as an effort to uphold the public’s will and to further his political agenda.
Flavio Bolsonaro, aged 44, holds a senatorial position and aims to embody his father’s conservative principles in the upcoming election against President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva scheduled for October 4, 2026.
Throughout his career, Jair Bolsonaro has encountered various health issues, including a knife attack during the 2018 campaign and subsequent surgeries. Doctors indicated he might also receive care for persistent hiccups during his recovery.
Bolsonaro was incarcerated following a court decision in late November, yet his political weight continues to influence his supporters. Flavio’s endorsement comes as a surprise to financial markets, which had anticipated his support for another candidate. After the announcement, Brazil's currency demonstrated notable strength against the U.S. dollar.
Flavio Bolsonaro's emergence in Brazilian politics could reshape the landscape as the 2026 elections approach, reaffirming Jair Bolsonaro’s influential role despite his ongoing legal and health battles.
