Israeli Strikes Kill One In Southern Lebanon Just Hours After Ceasefire Deal

Post by : Sophia Matthew

Fresh Israeli military strikes were reported in southern Lebanon only hours after Israel and Lebanon agreed to implement a new ceasefire, raising concerns about the stability of the fragile agreement and the future of regional peace efforts.

According to Lebanon's state-run National News Agency (NNA), Israeli drone strikes targeted several locations in southern Lebanon on Thursday. At least one of the attacks reportedly caused casualties. The strikes came shortly after both countries announced a conditional ceasefire following two days of high-level talks held in Washington, D.C.

The latest developments have cast doubt on whether the ceasefire can hold, especially after months of cross-border violence that has increased tensions throughout the region. The agreement had been viewed as an important step toward reducing hostilities and supporting wider diplomatic efforts involving several international partners.

Adding to the concern, a peacekeeper serving with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) reportedly died from injuries sustained when mortar shells struck a position near Marjayoun in southeastern Lebanon. Two other peacekeepers were injured in the same incident and are receiving medical treatment at a UN facility. Officials have not yet released further details about the circumstances surrounding the attack.

Earlier in the day, the Israeli military reported that air raid sirens sounded in northern Israel. According to Israeli authorities, one alert involved what was described as a suspicious aerial target, while another was later determined to be a false alarm. The incidents highlighted the continuing security concerns along the Israel-Lebanon border despite the ceasefire announcement.

The Israeli army also issued an urgent warning to residents in southern Lebanon, advising them not to travel south of the Zahrani River. Israeli officials stated that military operations were continuing in certain areas due to security concerns. Reports from Lebanon indicated that an Israeli airstrike also targeted the town of Al-Mansouri in the Tyre district.

The ceasefire agreement was announced after the United States hosted the fourth high-level trilateral meeting involving Israeli and Lebanese representatives on June 2 and 3. Diplomats described the talks as an effort to reduce tensions and prevent a broader regional conflict.

The agreement followed a particularly violent period in which at least nine people were reported killed in southern Lebanon during Israeli military operations on Wednesday. Around the same time, Hezbollah launched rockets toward northern Israel, further escalating tensions and putting an earlier ceasefire arrangement under pressure.

As part of the new ceasefire framework, both sides agreed to support the creation of pilot security zones where the Lebanese Armed Forces would assume exclusive control. The goal is to reduce the presence of armed non-state groups in specific areas and improve stability along the border region.

The agreement also includes plans for additional negotiations. Israeli and Lebanese representatives are expected to meet again on June 22 in an effort to reach a broader and more comprehensive understanding aimed at reducing future conflict.

However, the ceasefire has already faced criticism from some political figures. Israel’s National Security Minister, Itamar Ben Gvir, publicly opposed the agreement and described it as a mistake. His comments reflect divisions within Israel regarding the best approach to security and military operations along the Lebanese border.

Before the ceasefire was announced, Hezbollah said it had launched a series of rocket attacks against Israeli military positions in southern Lebanon and carried out drone operations targeting Israeli troops near the strategic Beaufort Castle area. These exchanges underscored the challenges facing both sides as they attempt to maintain calm.

The reports of Israeli strikes in southern Lebanon only hours after a new ceasefire agreement have raised fresh concerns about the durability of the deal. With casualties reported, a UN peacekeeper killed, and tensions remaining high on both sides of the border, the situation remains highly fragile. International observers will be closely watching whether upcoming diplomatic talks can help prevent further violence and support long-term stability in the region
