Islamabad Under Lockdown As US-Iran Peace Talks Remain Uncertain

Islamabad remains under a strict security lockdown as uncertainty continues over possible peace talks between the United States and Iran. Authorities have imposed tight restrictions across the city, especially in high-security areas, as diplomatic efforts continue behind the scenes.

Major roads leading into the capital have been sealed, and the Red Zone—home to key government buildings and foreign embassies—is heavily guarded. The nearby Blue Area, a major commercial hub, has seen markets shut down, limited supplies, and suspension of public transport services. These measures have caused significant disruption for residents, with many commuters facing difficulties moving around the city.

The heightened security comes as Abbas Araghchi arrived in Islamabad for high-level discussions with Pakistan’s leadership. He was received by senior officials including Asim Munir, Ishaq Dar, and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi. His visit is seen as part of ongoing efforts to restart dialogue between Washington and Tehran.

Despite the high-profile visit, there is still no official confirmation of direct negotiations between the US and Iran. Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei stated that no formal meeting with US officials is currently planned, and that Iran’s position would be communicated through Pakistan.

On the other hand, the White House has indicated that US representatives, including special envoy Steve Witkoff and adviser Jared Kushner, are expected to travel to Pakistan for possible talks. However, as of now, their arrival has not been officially confirmed, adding to the uncertainty surrounding the negotiations.

Pakistan has been playing an active role in mediating between the two countries. Officials have expressed hope that continued engagement could lead to “meaningful progress” toward regional peace. Reports suggest that a US logistics and security team is already present in Islamabad, preparing for potential discussions.

These developments follow an earlier round of talks held on April 11–12, which failed to produce a breakthrough. The broader conflict began on February 28 after military actions involving the United States and Israel, leading to escalating tensions in the region. A temporary ceasefire was later introduced and has been extended to allow more time for diplomatic efforts.

Overall, while Islamabad remains at the centre of these high-stakes negotiations, the outcome of the talks remains uncertain. The situation reflects both the complexity of the conflict and the challenges involved in achieving a lasting resolution through diplomacy.
