Washington Sundar Out with Side Strain; Bishnoi Joins Squad

India’s all-rounder, Washington Sundar, has been ruled out of the current one-day international series after suffering a side strain during the first match against New Zealand last week. The injury occurred while he was bowling, causing immediate discomfort in his lower rib area, which raised alarms within the team.

Sundar underwent medical imaging to evaluate the injury, which confirmed the side strain. Following a consultation with a medical expert, the advice was to take rest for several days to promote healing. After this recovery period, he is to report to the BCCI Centre of Excellence, where a rehabilitation and injury-management plan will be put in place to track his recovery.

The injury has prompted the selection committee to make adjustments to the lineup. Ravi Bishnoi has been brought in as Sundar’s replacement, enhancing India’s bowling options as they progress through the series. Furthermore, Shreyas Iyer will now be part of the T20I squad for the first three matches, stepping in for Tilak Varma, who is also out due to injury.

Sundar’s absence poses a challenge for the Indian side, particularly with the World Cup on the horizon. Recently named in India’s 15-member squad for the key tournament, his recovery will be closely monitored in the forthcoming days. Officials are optimistic that proper treatment and rehabilitation will facilitate his return before the global event.

The New Zealand series, taking place from January 21 to 31, is a crucial part of India’s preparations ahead of the World Cup, set to kick off on February 7, and will be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka.

India has been placed in Group A for the World Cup and will begin their journey against the United States on the opening day, followed by matches against Namibia, Pakistan, and the Netherlands as they aim to gain momentum from the start.
