A tragic case has surfaced in Edmonton, Canada, where a 44-year-old man of Indian origin lost his life from what is suspected to be a cardiac arrest after enduring a prolonged wait at a hospital emergency department without adequate medical attention.
Prashant Sreekumar, a father of three, was admitted to the facility on December 22 after suffering severe chest pain while at work. He was transported to the emergency room by a client and was registered at triage, then instructed to wait.
His family claims that Prashant was in extreme distress and consistently informed hospital personnel that the pain was unbearable. His father, Kumar Sreekumar, who arrived shortly after, stated his son described the discomfort as intolerable.
Medical practitioners performed an electrocardiogram (ECG) to check his heart's condition. The family was later informed that the ECG results showed no immediate concern, and Prashant was directed to stay in the waiting area.
As time progressed, his health deteriorated. His blood pressure reportedly increased, and he was provided with Tylenol for pain alleviation. However, no urgent intervention took place, and he spent more than eight hours in the emergency room.
Eventually, Prashant was called into the treatment zone. Moments after sitting down, he suddenly stood, clasped his chest, and fell to the ground.
Medical staff quickly gathered to administer aid and attempted resuscitation, but their efforts were in vain. He was declared dead due to an apparent cardiac incident.
Prashant Sreekumar leaves behind his wife and three children, ages three, 10, and 14.
The healthcare organization managing the hospital has expressed heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and mentioned that the incident is currently being reviewed by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. Officials reiterated that ensuring patient safety is crucial but chose not to disclose specific details until the review's completion.
This incident has ignited renewed discussions surrounding wait times in emergency rooms and the overall effectiveness of emergency care systems in Canada.
