India and Canada Resume High-Stakes Trade Negotiations

India and Canada are set to enhance their economic collaboration as leaders from both nations have agreed to restart discussions on a promising free trade agreement. During the G20 Summit in Johannesburg, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney met, marking a positive turn in their relationship after recent diplomatic challenges.

The Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) intends to double the bilateral trade to an impressive $50 billion by the year 2030. This initiative is expected to not only boost trade but also foster collaboration in vital sectors including technology, education, energy, defence, and space. Both countries are also looking at securing long-term uranium supply agreements while bolstering civil nuclear energy partnerships.

Moreover, the leaders emphasized the importance of the Australia-Canada-India Technology and Innovation (ACITI) Partnership. This trilateral initiative aims to develop critical technologies, artificial intelligence, nuclear energy strategies, and improve supply chain resilience. Carney also showed his support for India to host the AI Summit in February 2026, indicating a mutual interest in progressive innovations.

Bilateral relations had been strained in 2023 following the controversial death of Khalistani leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada. Former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau alleged Indian government involvement, a claim that was strongly denied by India. However, since Carney's appointment in March, both nations have actively sought to mend ties by designating new ambassadors and maintaining dialogue regarding trade, law enforcement, and security.

The G20 gathering highlighted the significance of high-level dialogue. Modi extended a personal invitation to Carney for a visit to India, suggesting ongoing engagement and a strengthening of the bilateral partnership. As CEPA negotiations take center stage once again, both countries are signaling a robust commitment to advancing economic and technological cooperation in the foreseeable future.
