A high-speed police chase culminated in a crash near Kampung Sungai Rual in Jeli, Kelantan, injuring nine men on Thursday morning. Authorities reported that among the injured, three suffered serious injuries, including one Malaysian individual believed to have been involved in smuggling undocumented migrants.
The chase began around 7:30 a.m. when a General Operations Force (GOF) patrol team spotted a suspicious Proton Saga on the East-West Highway, suspecting it was carrying undocumented foreigners.
As the officers pursued the suspect vehicle, the driver attempted to evade capture, accelerating in an effort to escape, which led to a high-speed chase with GOF officers in pursuit.
The vehicle lost control and crashed into a roadside embankment near Kampung Sungai Rual. Emergency services and police promptly arrived to assist the injured and secure the scene of the accident.
Authorities apprehended the 21-year-old Malaysian driver, along with eight Bangladeshi men aged between 20 and 40. The injured were taken to Jeli Hospital for treatment, while several suspects were transported to the district police headquarters for questioning.
Reports state that officers seized 10 yaba pills during inspections of the vehicle, suspected to contain methamphetamine. Investigators are probing if there's a more extensive criminal network connecting migrant trafficking and illegal drug activities.
This operation highlights ongoing enforcement measures against cross-border migrant smuggling in the region. Law enforcement agencies are ramping up patrols and monitoring along routes often exploited for illegal transport activities near Malaysia's northern borders.
The incident is under investigation for both migrant smuggling and narcotics offenses. Police have indicated that further arrests could occur as inquiries continue into the wider network associated with the case.
