On Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially launched India’s inaugural Vande Bharat sleeper train, establishing a rail connection between Howrah, close to Kolkata, and Kamakhya Junction in Guwahati. This innovative overnight service provides a rapid transit link between West Bengal and Assam, both of which are gearing up for upcoming elections.
The train was ceremonially launched from Malda Town in West Bengal, while the return service to Howrah was initiated via a virtual platform.
Engineered to cater to the rising demand for travel in India, the fully air-conditioned Vande Bharat sleeper train promises an experience akin to that of flying, all at reasonable fares. The service aims to significantly shorten travel time by approximately 2.5 hours on the Howrah–Guwahati route, promoting religious tourism in the area.
The train is capable of reaching speeds up to 180 km/h, generally operating at 120-130 km/h. It offers carefully designed berths with a smooth journey supported by a sophisticated suspension system. State-of-the-art disinfectant technology eradicates 99% of germs, with fresh linens and towels made available to travelers. Additionally, safety measures include the indigenous Kavach automatic protection system along with real-time surveillance. Sliding doors operate automatically, securing themselves during journeys and opening solely at designated stops.
Travelers will savor local dishes as part of their ticket price. Assamese cuisine will be served on the journey from Kamakhya to Howrah, while Bengali delicacies await on the return trip.
Ticket costs vary from Rs 2,300 to Rs 3,600, based on the chosen travel class. This new initiative signifies a pivotal advancement in modernizing rail transport in India, integrating speed, safety, comfort, and local culinary offerings for passengers.
