Imphal West: Torchlight Protest Erupts into Violence Amid Curfew

Post by : Bianca Hayes

Tensions in Manipur’s Imphal West district flared when thousands openly defied curfew orders, staging a torchlight protest seeking justice for the victims of a devastating bomb explosion.

Massive rally defies prohibitions

The protest commenced around 7 pm on Thursday in Singjamei, attracting sizable crowds with torches in hand. Protesters demanded immediate action against those accountable for the April 7 explosion in Tronglaobi, Bishnupur district, which sadly resulted in the death of two children.

Demonstration approaches sensitive areas

The rally progressed over two kilometers, reaching Chingamathak, a location in proximity to critical administrative and security sites, such as the Chief Minister’s residence, police headquarters, and Lok Bhavan.

Escalating tensions with law enforcement

Reports indicate that some protesters chanted anti-police slogans while confronting security forces, who were significantly outnumbered. Authorities urged the crowd to disperse, citing existing prohibitory orders, but tensions quickly heightened into a physical confrontation.

Management of crowd turbulence

As tensions rose, security forces initiated baton charges and deployed tear gas in an effort to regain control. This led some protesters to hurl stones, exacerbating the situation.

Casualties and ongoing security measures

Multiple injuries were reported during the disturbances, with at least five individuals requiring treatment at a nearby hospital for minor injuries and gas exposure issues. Authorities emphasized that strict curfew restrictions endure, with night movement limited in various state regions following prior violence tied to the blast.

Officials cautioned that certain factions might exploit the unrest to heighten tensions and target security personnel.
