At a recent global media summit, Idris Elba shared insights from his 30-year career as a British actor of African descent, emphasizing the vital role of creators in shaping global content.

Describing himself as “a bridge between different cultures,” Elba spoke about the power of storytelling and the responsibility creators have in connecting African narratives with the world. Drawing on his experience as an actor, DJ, filmmaker, and philanthropist, he encouraged new ways to bridge the global media landscape through authentic and diverse stories.

Elba was recognized as the “Son of Africa” for his efforts to highlight African youth voices. “We are at a pivotal point in media and information. Let’s use this moment to connect, innovate, and share ideas,” he said, while cautioning about the spread of misinformation.

He stressed the importance of creators owning their intellectual property and receiving fair compensation, pointing out that many African countries still lack policies to protect their creative talent.

Elba also discussed the Elba Hope Foundation, which he co-founded with his wife Sabrina. The foundation focuses on gender equality, youth development, and food security, providing young people with tools to create meaningful projects with lasting impact.

Highlighting narrative sovereignty, Elba urged that Africa’s stories be told authentically by African creators. He also addressed the responsible use of technology, including AI, stating, “It isn’t a threat—it’s an extra tool. True intelligence comes from critical thinking and trusting our instincts.”
