Police in Hamilton have launched a manhunt for two suspects after a 16-year-old boy was fatally shot inside a busy downtown shopping mall, raising serious concerns about public safety.
The incident took place at Jackson Square on King Street West on Friday evening. Authorities said they responded to reports of gunfire shortly after 5 p.m. Upon arrival, officers found the teenage victim suffering from gunshot wounds. He was rushed to hospital in critical condition but later died from his injuries.
Investigators revealed that the shooting followed an altercation between individuals inside a wireless mobile store located within the mall. During the confrontation, multiple shots were fired, causing panic among shoppers and staff present at the scene.
Police stated that two suspects fled the area immediately after the shooting, heading eastbound toward James Street. Both individuals are described as white males, approximately 19 to 20 years old. One was last seen wearing a grey tracksuit, while the other was wearing a blue tracksuit. Authorities believe both suspects were armed.
Officials have described the incident as a targeted attack but stressed that it still poses a serious risk to public safety. Police are continuing to gather evidence and are urging witnesses or anyone with information to come forward to assist in the investigation.
Martin Schulenberg said the shooting was deeply concerning due to its location inside a public space. He noted that while the attack may have been targeted, the presence of firearms in such an environment creates danger for everyone.
Reacting to the incident, Andrea Horwath expressed shock and grief over the loss of a young life. She described the killing as “senseless” and called for stronger action to address gun violence. In a public statement, she emphasized that illegal firearms have no place in communities and urged authorities to take urgent steps to improve safety.
