Google has officially announced a new generation of laptops called “Googlebook,” marking one of the company’s biggest changes in personal computing since the launch of Chromebooks more than 15 years ago. The new platform was revealed during Google’s Android Show: I/O Edition 2026 event and is designed around artificial intelligence powered by Google’s Gemini system. The company says Googlebooks will represent the next step in laptop technology by combining Android, Chrome, cloud services, and AI into one connected experience.
According to Google, Googlebooks are being built from the ground up for what the company calls “Gemini Intelligence.” Unlike traditional Chromebooks that mainly focused on web browsing and cloud-based tools, the new Googlebook platform is designed to offer more advanced AI support directly across the operating system. The devices will run on a new Android-based software platform that combines elements of ChromeOS with Android apps and AI-powered tools.
One of the main features introduced with Googlebook is something called the “Magic Pointer.” Instead of functioning like a normal laptop cursor, the Magic Pointer is connected directly to Gemini AI. Google says users can move or “wiggle” the cursor over content on the screen to receive instant suggestions, actions, or contextual help. For example, pointing at a date inside an email could automatically create a calendar event, while selecting images may allow Gemini to generate visual comparisons or editing suggestions.
Googlebooks will also support standard Android applications through the Google Play Store, giving users access to millions of mobile apps directly on their laptops. The company says the platform will include stronger integration between Android phones and laptops, allowing users to move files, notifications, apps, and messages more smoothly between devices. Reports suggest Google wants the experience to feel more unified across phones, tablets, laptops, and wearable devices.
Another feature announced during the event is “Create Your Widget,” an AI-based tool that allows users to generate personalized widgets using natural language prompts. Users will reportedly be able to ask Gemini to create widgets showing travel details, reminders, calendars, emails, weather updates, or personalized dashboards based on their activity and interests. Google says the goal is to make laptops more adaptive and proactive rather than simply reacting to commands.
The company also confirmed that major computer manufacturers including Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, and Lenovo are already working on Googlebook devices. While Google did not reveal exact hardware specifications or pricing, early reports describe premium laptop designs with lightweight builds and a glowing light bar known as the “Glowbar,” which may be connected to AI notifications or system functions. Most devices are expected to launch later in 2026.
Although Googlebooks are expected to replace Chromebooks over time, Google clarified that current Chromebook devices will continue receiving software and security updates. The company stated that support for many Chromebook models will remain active for up to 10 years depending on the device. However, technology analysts believe Googlebook represents a major long-term shift away from the traditional Chromebook system toward a more AI-focused computing platform.
Industry experts say the launch of Googlebook also increases competition in the growing AI computer market. Microsoft has been expanding its Copilot+ PC platform, while Apple continues integrating artificial intelligence into MacBooks and other devices. Google now appears to be positioning Gemini at the center of its future laptop ecosystem as the company pushes deeper into AI-powered consumer technology.
The announcement quickly created discussion online, with many technology users reacting to both the new AI features and the unusual “Googlebook” name. Despite mixed reactions about branding, analysts say the platform could become one of Google’s most important hardware and software launches in recent years if the company successfully combines AI tools, Android apps, and productivity features into a smooth user experience.
