Louvre Abu Dhabi Calls for Research Fellows for 2026

Post by : Bianca Hayes

The renowned Louvre Abu Dhabi has opened applications for its 2026 Fellowships and Grants Programme, aimed at fostering innovative research in the fields of art history, museum studies, and heritage science. Following a successful response to the inaugural 2025 cycle, this initiative underscores the museum’s commitment to advancing knowledge through international academic collaboration.

Scholars globally are encouraged to present proposals that delve into the museum’s extensive collection, archives, and research resources. This programme is designed to stimulate original perspectives, enhancing comprehension of international artistic ties while promoting studies that go beyond conventional narratives.

The application window is open until 7 February 2026, and submissions will be assessed by a panel of distinguished experts, with successful fellows to be revealed in May 2026.

The 2026 iteration highlights three primary themes. Firstly, Global History of Museums and Collections examines the evolution of museums within varied cultural frameworks and the impact of collecting, exhibiting, and visitor engagement on the concept of universality in museums.

The second theme, Circulation of Styles, Images and Texts, investigates the journey of artistic concepts, objects, and visual languages influenced by trade, migration, and cultural interchange, revealing their impact on artistic evolution across diverse regions and eras.

Lastly, Precious Materials and Routes of Exchange delves into the historical movement of materials and craftsmanship along trade routes—from the Silk Roads to maritime pathways—and their influence on artistic production.

Participating researchers will have access to the Louvre Abu Dhabi's Resource Centre and its cutting-edge Scientific Laboratory, the first of its kind within the Gulf region. These facilities provide advanced tools for researching materials, conservation studies, and art historical inquiries. Furthermore, fellows will engage in internal workshops and collaborative sessions with the museum community.

Both short-term (three months) and long-term (nine months) fellowships are offered, supporting local scholars as well as those based abroad. Proposals should be submitted in English via the museum's official website.

The 2026 programme further solidifies Louvre Abu Dhabi's commitment to enhancing global research networks and encouraging scholarly work that reconsiders artistic histories through a broader, interconnected lens.
