Istanbul has warmly welcomed the 152nd General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), uniting elected officials from all over the globe. They come together to confront vital issues surrounding peace, development, and governance.
The opening session boasted significant attendance from various legislative officials, including a notable delegation from Qatar’s Shura Council, led by Speaker Hassan bin Abdullah Al Ghanim.
Prioritizing Peace, Collaboration, and Sustainable Growth
During discussions, leaders pressed for enhanced international cooperation among parliaments to effectively address the escalating global crises. The dialogue underscored the critical need for maintaining international peace and fostering sustainable development for generations to come.
Under the theme “Nurturing hope, securing peace and ensuring justice for future generations,” the assembly featured a recorded address by António Guterres, who emphasized global priorities such as peace, social equity, and strides toward sustainable development.
This edition of the assembly occurs amid increasingly complex global dynamics, necessitating coordinated parliamentary efforts at various levels. Critical agenda items include issues of international peace and security, governance in post-conflict regions, and the attainment of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Qatar Showcases Climate Action and Sustainability Initiatives
Qatar's involvement reached beyond the assembly itself, with participation in the 5th Conference of the Non-Aligned Movement Parliamentary Network, where lawmakers exchanged perspectives on the significance of climate-resilient urban development.
In his address, Ahmed bin Hitmi Al Hitmi elaborated on the challenges posed by climate change, particularly emphasizing resource shortages and environmental dangers affecting developing countries. He advocated for the adoption of more resilient urban planning strategies.
Al Hitmi further reiterated Qatar’s dedication to sustainability as articulated in its National Vision 2030, showcasing investments in sustainable infrastructure, clean energy proliferation, and enhanced resource efficiency.
He also highlighted the crucial function of the Shura Council in backing these efforts through strategic legislative and oversight measures, stressing that global climate challenges necessitate stronger parliamentary partnerships—especially concerning climate finance, technology transfers, and capacity building.
