A significant gas leak from an operational ONGC oil well in Andhra Pradesh's Konaseema district ignited widespread fear on Monday. The incident occurred during repair operations, resulting in a dramatic blowout causing flames to erupt.
The accident took place in Irusumanda village, within the Razole mandal. Officials stated that the oil well had ceased production temporarily, with repair work being conducted utilizing a workover rig. During this process, a vigorous blowout released a substantial amount of gas combined with crude oil, shooting upwards into the atmosphere.
The gas leak quickly ignited, creating towering flames and alarming the local populace. Heavy clouds of gas and smoke enveloped Irusumanda and neighboring areas, spreading rapidly and impairing visibility.
In response, local authorities issued urgent advisories through loudspeakers, instructing residents in at least three nearby villages to refrain from using electrical appliances or lighting cooking stoves to avert additional fire hazards.
Panchayat officials and district authorities urged villagers to evacuate without delay. Many fled their homes in a panic, relocating livestock and vital belongings to ensure their safety as the situation escalated.
Emergency response teams from ONGC quickly arrived to manage the gas leak and tackle the fire. An exclusion zone was established, with constant monitoring to prevent any further complications.
District administration officials and ONGC engineers are closely supervising the ongoing safety and containment efforts at the site.

The company operates numerous fields interconnected by an extensive pipeline system that delivers processed gas to national networks and crude oil for refining.
