Family Feud: Ewa Sokola Takes Sister Kaja to Court for Defamation

Post by : Bianca Hayes

The fallout from the Harvey Weinstein trial has escalated into a personal legal clash between two sisters at the heart of the proceedings.

Dr. Ewa Sokola, a cardiologist practicing in Wrocław, Poland, has initiated a defamation lawsuit against her sister, Kaja Sokola, in a New York federal court. This legal action, filed on Tuesday, contends that Kaja made untrue statements that have significantly tarnished Ewa's professional reputation and personal integrity.

Context of the Legal Battle

Kaja Sokola was a key witness in Weinstein’s recent criminal proceedings, alleging that he sexually assaulted her in 2006. Ewa was called to testify in her sister's favor, but her testimony inadvertently supported Weinstein’s defense.

After the trial, Kaja openly criticized Ewa's statements, asserting they undermined her claims and weakened the overall prosecution. Court documents reveal that Kaja regarded her sister’s actions as a severe “betrayal,” suggesting Ewa intentionally ignored crucial journal entries regarding the alleged assault.

Claims Made in the Defamation Case

Ewa’s lawsuit accuses Kaja of libel, stating that her remarks have exposed her to public disdain and professional disgrace in Poland. Ewa asserts that Kaja’s comments have negatively influenced her standing within the Wrocław medical community, resulting in lost patient referrals and ongoing reputational damage to her practice.

Moreover, Ewa claims that Kaja falsely accused her of severe misconduct, including homicide and collusion with Weinstein’s legal representatives. She is seeking damages that have not been specified.

Attempts to reach Kaja Sokola's legal representatives and spokesperson were made on Thursday and Friday, but no response was received before publication.

Outcomes of the Trial

This lawsuit comes on the heels of a divided jury verdict in June. Weinstein was found guilty of forcibly engaging in sexual acts with production assistant Miriam Haley, while the jury acquitted him on charges related to Kaja's allegations. Both incidents were claimed to have occurred in 2006.

The jury was deadlocked on a third count, alleging Weinstein raped former actor Jessica Mann, prompting a mistrial declaration after one juror refused to continue deliberations.

Weinstein's sentencing is pending, as his legal team has filed a motion to overturn the conviction, alleging that two jurors experienced undue pressure to find him guilty. A decision from Judge Curtis Farber is expected on January 8.

Details Behind the Allegations

Kaja testified that Weinstein facilitated her audition as an extra in the film The Nanny Diaries and later invited her and her sister to meet him, where she alleges the assault occurred just days before her 20th birthday.

Post-trial, Kaja has accused Ewa of providing damaging information to Weinstein's defense by sharing personal journal entries that purportedly documented past assaults but omitted any mention of Weinstein, thereby undermining the prosecution's case.

A Turbulent Family Dynamic

What began as pivotal testimony in a landmark criminal trial has now spiraled into an acrimonious family dispute. As the ramifications of the Weinstein trial resonate through legal channels, Ewa's defamation lawsuit introduces an intensely personal layer to this ongoing saga.
