US Targets Iranian Tankers Amid Rising Tensions in the Hormuz Strait

Post by : Bianca Hayes

In a surge of tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, the United States has taken action by disabling two Iranian oil tankers following confrontations with Iranian forces, despite a fragile ceasefire in effect.

US military sources indicated that these Iranian tankers were attempting to breach a blockade imposed on Iranian ports during operations on Friday. Footage provided by the US military depicted fighter jets striking the vessels' smokestacks. Earlier in the week, another Iranian tanker sustained damage when a US aircraft targeted its rudder.

These confrontations occur against the backdrop of Iran reportedly launching attacks on three US Navy ships operating in the region. The Pentagon confirmed that US forces successfully defended their vessels and executed strikes on Iranian military positions. Fortunately, there were no damages to US ships during these operations.

Simultaneously, the UAE reported a fresh attack from Iran involving missiles and drones. The UAE Defence Ministry stated that their air defense systems intercepted two ballistic missiles and three drones. Three injuries were reported, but officials have not clarified if all threats were neutralized.

This latest outbreak of violence casts new doubts on the tenuous ceasefire that has been upheld for nearly a month. The US government continues to await a response from Iran regarding a new proposal aimed at de-escalating tensions, reopening the Strait of Hormuz, and curtailing Tehran’s nuclear ambitions.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed hopes that Iran would present a “serious offer” soon, warning that any aggression towards American forces would trigger a robust military response.

Iran condemned the recent military actions by the US, deeming them a breach of the ceasefire. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi accused the US of opting for a military crisis over diplomatic solutions.

Since the hostilities began on February 28, the Iranian regime has significantly restricted navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial channel for global oil shipments. Any disruptions here have led to significant hikes in global fuel prices and heightened market instability.

In related incidents, an Iranian cargo vessel was reported to be ablaze during the nighttime strikes, with local media stating that one sailor lost their life and ten others were injured. It remains uncertain whether this vessel was among those targeted by US forces.

Satellite images analyzed by maritime experts have revealed a considerable oil spill near Iran’s Kharg Island terminal, with estimates suggesting that approximately 80,000 barrels of oil may have contaminated Gulf waters. The source of the spill is undetermined, though analysts speculate it could be linked to military operations in the area.

Environmental advocates have raised alarms that the spill might spread to the shores of the UAE, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia within weeks if conditions deteriorate, although some experts anticipate offshore dispersion before it reaches land.

US President Donald Trump maintains that the ceasefire is still operational, while cautioning Iran about the potential for extensive bombing should no agreement be established.

Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has reported ongoing communications with both Washington and Tehran, striving to avert an escalation of the conflict.

The ongoing situation has also disrupted international maritime operations, with numerous commercial ships stranded within the Persian Gulf as Iran reportedly seeks to formalize its dominion over trafficking in the Strait of Hormuz. These developments have heightened global concerns for the safety of oil and trade routes in the area.
