Greater Noida: A heartbreaking incident occurred over the weekend when Yuvraj Mehta, a 27-year-old software engineer, lost his life as his vehicle fell into a waterlogged pit in Greater Noida.
The engineer was driving back to Tata Eureka Park in Noida Sector 150 from his job in Gurugram when he encountered dense fog and lost control of his Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara. The car leapt over a drain and landed in a pit roughly 50 feet deep, filled with rainwater. Authorities noted that the pit lacked any barricades or reflective notifications.
In a desperate move, Mehta managed to clamber atop his vehicle and called his father for assistance, stating, “Papa, I am stuck; the car has fallen into the drain.”
Emergency responders, including teams from the police, fire department, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), rushed to the scene. However, the rescue efforts were hampered by the thick fog. Despite employing ropes, cranes, and ladders, they were unable to reach him in time.
Mehta remained on the roof of his car for about 90 minutes before it eventually sank. His body was later retrieved using a boat.
Authorities are investigating the tragic accident and have issued warnings to the public about the dangers of unmarked pits and limited visibility during foggy weather.
