Sydney: The highly anticipated 2026 tennis season launches with elite players Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner, and Aryna Sabalenka ready to make their mark at the Australian Open. Competition begins this Friday with the mixed-team United Cup in Perth and Sydney, showcasing talents like women’s world No. 2 Iga Swiatek and men’s world No. 3 Alexander Zverev.
Defending champion Aryna Sabalenka, currently ranked No. 1 in the world and a two-time Australian Open winner, kicks off her season at the Brisbane International from January 4-11. She'll face a challenging field, including defending champion Madison Keys and world No. 4 Amanda Anisimova.
Spanish sensation Carlos Alcaraz and Italy’s Jannik Sinner, affectionately nicknamed “Sincaraz” by fans, will engage in an exhibition match in South Korea on January 10—a crucial warm-up before the Australian Open starts eight days later.
At 22, Alcaraz, who finished last season as ATP year-end No. 1 after clinching titles at the French Open and US Open, aims to advance beyond the quarterfinals in Melbourne, having been ousted by Novak Djokovic in 2025. He enters the new season with a fresh coaching setup following a split with longtime trainer Juan Carlos Ferrero.
Sinner had a standout 2025, successfully defending his Australian Open title and triumphing at Wimbledon, despite enduring a three-month doping ban. He concluded the year with an impressive record of 58 wins against just six losses.
The veteran Novak Djokovic, aged 38, will begin his campaign at the Adelaide International on January 12, still striving for a record-breaking 25th Grand Slam win and an 11th Australian Open title, while acknowledging the emerging threat from stars like Alcaraz and Sinner.
The United Cup also features players like Felix Auger-Aliassime, Taylor Fritz, and Alex de Minaur, while Daniil Medvedev and Nick Kyrgios compete in Brisbane.
On the women’s side, Sabalenka is brimming with confidence after winning her second US Open and claiming titles in Brisbane, Madrid, and Miami. She is a key contender for her third Australian Open title but faces tough competition from Iga Swiatek, Coco Gauff, and Elena Rybakina.
Reflecting on her past successes, Sabalenka shares, “Winning it twice boosts my confidence, but each year presents new hurdles.” She hopes to expand her already impressive Grand Slam record.
Iga Swiatek is leading Poland at the United Cup, partnering with Hubert Hurkacz in pursuit of redemption after last year’s final loss to Team USA and a defeat to Germany in 2024. Team USA is bolstered with the talents of Coco Gauff and Taylor Fritz, while Japan celebrates the debut of four-time major winner Naomi Osaka.
The 2026 Australian Open is set to deliver exhilarating matchups as seasoned champions and up-and-coming stars compete for tennis supremacy in Australia.
