In a somber ruling, a Singapore court has levied the maximum fine on an 86-year-old driver following a devastating accident that took the lives of two of his closest friends. This incident raises urgent questions regarding road safety, especially concerning older drivers.
The unfortunate event unfolded on October 11, 2023, at a parking garage entry in Toa Payoh. The driver, identified as Phua Chiew Tong, was out with friends aged 76 and 83, with whom he has enjoyed a friendship spanning over fifty years.
Court reports indicate that as the passengers were disembarking, the vehicle unexpectedly rolled backward. In a frantic effort to halt the motion, the driver mistakenly pressed down on the accelerator instead of the brake. This led to the car colliding with both men, knocking them over before it crashed into a curb and a support pillar.
Though both victims were promptly transported to the hospital, they sadly succumbed to their injuries shortly thereafter. Medical evaluations affirmed that severe blunt force trauma and multiple injuries were the causes of death.
Consequently, the court imposed a fine of S$10,000 on the driver and banned him from driving for eight years. Prosecutors labeled the case as involving “exceptional circumstances” due to the grave outcomes stemming from a brief lapse in judgment.
Defense arguments emphasized the driver’s age, worsening health, and the emotional toll the incident has taken on him, including post-traumatic stress disorder since the crash. While the court acknowledged these aspects, it maintained that accountability was essential given the tragic loss of life.
This case has ignited wider discussions in Singapore surrounding the assessment of elderly drivers, promoting greater road safety awareness, and emphasizing necessary preventive measures to avert future tragedies.
