In a disturbing case from Singapore, a 40-year-old man has been sentenced to 13 weeks in prison after being found guilty of assaulting his elderly father and forcing him to sleep outside their residence. The prolonged nature of the abuse has garnered significant public attention.
Bennie Lee Wei Ming confessed to several assault charges against his 74-year-old father. Prosecutors explained that the incidents of abuse spanned over several months, culminating in the man's arrest.
Throughout this abusive period, the accused often barred his father from entering their apartment, compelling him to spend nights outdoors in the communal void deck. The victim could only return home if he complied with certain conditions set by his son.
The matter escalated when an argument led to the accused physically assaulting his father, employing kicks and punches during one such altercation. He continued the assault when his requests were not fulfilled.
Beyond the physical aggression, threats were also made by the accused, warning that matters would not resolve peacefully. On multiple occasions, the elderly man was denied entry to their home, forcing him to endure the night outside.
This case also touched on family dynamics, as the accused’s mother had previously left their shared home due to the abusive environment. Additional charges concerning her mistreatment were considered during the trial.
Officials have underscored the gravity of such offences, particularly given the vulnerable position of elder victims. This case illustrates the legal system’s firm stance against domestic violence and the imperative to safeguard individuals from harm in their own homes.
