Severe Winter Storm Blasts Eastern US, Knocks Out Power to Millions

Post by : Bianca Hayes

Washington, US: A formidable winter storm is currently impacting the eastern United States, disrupting the lives of almost 1 million individuals by cutting off power and resulting in the cancellation of more than 10,000 flights. This storm brings a mix of heavy snowfall, sleet, and dangerously low temperatures.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has alerted the public that extremely low temperatures and perilous conditions could persist for several days, posing risks to travel and infrastructure. The most impacted states include Tennessee, Mississippi, Texas, Louisiana, Kentucky, Georgia, Virginia, and Alabama.

According to PowerOutage.us, over 850,000 homes remain without electricity, notably affecting 290,000 in Tennessee and over 100,000 across Mississippi, Texas, and Louisiana.

Meteorologist Allison Santorelli characterized this storm as "unprecedented," given its expansive impact on nearly 213 million people spanning a 2,000-mile corridor from New Mexico and Texas to New England.

Termed "historic" by US President Donald Trump, the storm has led to federal emergency disaster declarations. Nearly 20 states along with the District of Columbia have proclaimed weather emergencies. Trump urged citizens to "stay safe, and stay warm."

The storm has triggered significant travel headaches, with major airlines alerting travelers about potential cancellations and delays. FEMA has pre-deployed supplies and search-and-rescue units across numerous states. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem has advised residents to ensure they have enough fuel and food supplies while taking necessary precautions.

The NWS warned that the heavy ice accumulation could result in prolonged power outages, extensive damage to trees, and hazardous travel conditions, even in regions unaccustomed to severe winter weather.
