In a decisive move, Dubai Humanitarian has initiated an emergency airlift of vital medical supplies aimed at tackling a recent Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). This operation was executed under the guidance of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, alongside collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO).

The airlift comprises 20 metric tonnes of crucial medical supplies sourced from WHO's emergency inventory located in Dubai. The shipment departed from Al Maktoum International Airport, making its way through Uganda to bolster healthcare initiatives in eastern Congo, where health officials are striving to control the spread of the harmful virus.

These medical provisions are anticipated to benefit hundreds of patients over the coming month and aid approximately 280 healthcare facilities in the impacted areas. Included in the shipment are multipurpose tents, disinfectants, personal protective equipment (PPE), thermometers, and other essential resources necessary for disease management and infection prevention.

Giuseppe Saba, CEO and Board Member of Dubai Humanitarian, emphasized the organization's ongoing dedication to assisting humanitarian partners in responding swiftly to global health crises. He remarked that the prompt delivery of these life-saving supplies is vital amid the rising Ebola cases. He reinforced that Dubai Humanitarian remains equipped to continue its support through the Global Humanitarian Impact Fund and in conjunction with the Dubai Royal Air Wing.

Saba also pointed out the mounting obstacles faced by humanitarian organizations, including disruptions in supply chains and scarce funding. In spite of these hurdles, Dubai Humanitarian is steadfast in its partnerships with international organizations and the Directorate-General for European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (DG ECHO) to guarantee that vital medicines and emergency resources reach communities in dire need.

Dr. Hanan Balkhy, WHO Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean, commended both the UAE and Dubai Humanitarian for their unwavering support in addressing global health emergencies. She asserted that rapid action and worldwide cooperation are crucial as the world remains vigilant following the declaration of a Public Health Emergency of International Concern.

According to Dr. Balkhy, this airlift showcases the importance of robust partnerships during health crises. She elaborated that the supplies will empower frontline healthcare workers to rapidly identify, control, and respond to Ebola cases while ensuring their safety as they provide care for patients and affected communities.

Dubai Humanitarian has a history of significant involvement in international health responses, having served as a crucial logistics hub during the West Africa Ebola outbreak from 2014 to 2016, assisting UN agencies and humanitarian organizations in delivering medical aid to the most impacted regions.

The ongoing Ebola response underscores Dubai's enduring commitment to global humanitarian initiatives and its role in aiding nations confronted with urgent health crises. As Congo fights to manage the outbreak, the timely arrival of these medical supplies is anticipated to enhance healthcare provisions and contribute to the battle against the deadly virus.
