Formation of Supreme Committee for Al Gaffal Dhow Race 2026 in Dubai

The Dubai International Marine Club has made an official announcement regarding the establishment of the Supreme Organising Committee for the 35th Al Gaffal Race, a celebrated event featuring 60-feet traditional dhows, which stands as one of the UAE's hallmark maritime sports occasions.

This year, the event will be held under the auspices of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who serves as the Crown Prince of Dubai and the Deputy Prime Minister. This decision was affirmed during the club's second Board of Directors assembly for the year 2026.

Leadership of the Organising Committee

Dr. Ahmed Saeed bin Meshar will chair the newly established Supreme Committee, with Saif Juma Al Suwaidi stepping in as Vice-Chairman. Additional members include Khalid Khamis bin Dismal, Khalid Ali Al Balooshi, and Mohammed Abdullah Harib, who is also the CEO of the Dubai International Marine Club. The Committee Rapporteur is Mohammed Fadhel Al Sadi.

Enduring support for marine culture

Dr. Ahmed Bin Meshar expressed appreciation for the consistent backing from Dubai’s leadership in promoting marine activities and safeguarding national traditions. He mentioned that the Al Gaffal Race, inaugurated in 1991, is a testament to the nation’s profound ties to the sea and its maritime history.

Recognized as a key heritage marine sporting event in the Gulf, the race commemorates the historical return of pearl divers after lengthy voyages.

The race: history and importance

Since its establishment, the Al Gaffal Race has evolved into a significant cultural and athletic event, drawing over 3,000 participants each year. The course extends beyond 50 nautical miles, showcasing both endurance and traditional sailing expertise.

In its previous iteration, held on 2 May last year, more than 110 dhows competed, with Zilzal 25 winning near the iconic Burj Al Arab.

Safety measures and scheduling updates

Considering the current regional circumstances, the organising committee is committed to monitoring the situation to ensure the safety of all participants and officials. The race is tentatively scheduled to take place between 16 and 31 May, pending ongoing evaluations.

Authorities are also working on contingency measures and ensuring thorough logistical preparedness in collaboration with relevant government entities to uphold the highest safety standards.
