On Sunday, three of Moscow's primary airports faced a temporary shutdown as Ukraine executed a significant drone attack targeting the Russian capital, leading to substantial flight disruptions and heightened security alarm.
Russian officials reported that air traffic was halted at Vnukovo, Domodedovo, and Zhukovsky airports for approximately one hour in the afternoon. This shutdown occurred between 1300 GMT and 1400 GMT, resulting in delays for numerous domestic and international flights, notably at Vnukovo, the second-busiest airport in Moscow.
The nation's aviation regulator indicated that the precaution was necessary to protect passengers while air defense systems were activated around the capital. Normal flight operations began to resume gradually post-incident as the situation stabilized.
Mayor Sergei Sobyanin announced that Russian air defenses managed to intercept and destroy at least 27 drones heading towards the city. While no significant damage within Moscow was reported immediately, this event underscores the expanding reach of drone warfare within Russian territory.
Ukraine did not provide an immediate comment regarding the drone strikes. Since the outbreak of hostilities in 2022, Kyiv has increasingly turned to drone tactics while also enduring repeated air strikes on its cities from Russian forces.
In a separate incident, the governor of Russia's Belgorod region, adjacent to Ukraine, reported a fatal drone strike earlier that day. A vehicle carrying a family was struck, resulting in one death and injuries to two, including a four-year-old child.
These occurrences shed light on how the nearly four-year-long conflict continues to impact civilian life and essential infrastructure on both sides, with air travel and border regions increasingly caught in hostile exchanges.
