Opposition Chief Strikes Back Over Passport Confiscation

Anicet Georges Dologuélé, the former Prime Minister and opposition leader of the Central African Republic, has vehemently condemned the government's seizure of his diplomatic passport, labeling it a gross abuse of power. This incident exacerbates the rising political tensions in the nation and stirs worries regarding democratic freedoms and political liberties.

Dologuélé was prevented from boarding a flight to Addis Ababa, where he was slated to attend a meeting concerning the African Union Peace Fund. He reported that airport personnel informed him that he could not leave the country because authorities had confiscated his diplomatic passport.

At a press conference in Bangui, he expressed profound dismay and anger regarding this action, stating he felt “stateless” in his native land while accusing the government of employing administrative pressures against political adversaries.

Having served as Prime Minister from 1999 to 2001, Dologuélé is a prominent figure in the opposition. Since 2018, he has been part of the board of the African Union Peace Fund and actively engages in international discussions related to peace and stability in the region.

This political strife follows Dologuélé's challenge against President Faustin-Archange Touadéra in the latest presidential election. Last year, he renounced his French nationality to satisfy constitutional mandates and qualify for the presidential race.

Dologuélé has consistently criticized the electoral process, labeling it unjust and lacking transparency. While official results indicated he garnered 13.1 percent of the votes, President Touadéra secured another term amid growing skepticism regarding the legitimacy of the electoral system.

He noted that the government has denied him a new standard passport following his renunciation of French citizenship. Hence, he continued to rely on the diplomatic passport due to the absence of any replacement.

Political analysts suggest that this incident might heighten worries regarding political freedoms and the state of democracy in the Central African Republic. Human rights advocates and global monitors have frequently highlighted the challenges faced by opposition figures and government critics.

The situation has drawn attention throughout Africa, given Dologuélé's link to duties tied to the African Union Peace Fund.
