The family of acclaimed actress Diane Keaton has expressed gratitude for the “extraordinary messages of love and support” received following her death at the age of 79.

In a statement, the Keaton family confirmed that the Oscar-winning star passed away from pneumonia on October 11 in California. “The Keaton family are very grateful for the extraordinary messages of love and support they have received these past few days on behalf of their beloved Diane,” the statement read.

Born in Los Angeles, Keaton rose to international fame in the 1970s with her role as Kay Adams-Corleone in The Godfather films. She went on to achieve iconic status through her performance in Annie Hall (1977), which earned her an Academy Award, Golden Globe, and BAFTA for Best Actress.

Throughout her career spanning more than five decades, Keaton starred in numerous celebrated films including Father of the Bride, Something’s Gotta Give, First Wives Club, Reds, and Marvin’s Room. She was nominated for four Oscars, all in the Best Actress category.

Hollywood tributes poured in soon after the news of her passing. Her First Wives Club co-stars Goldie Hawn and Bette Midler both shared heartfelt messages, with Hawn describing Keaton as leaving “a trail of fairy dust, filled with particles of light and memories beyond imagination,” while Midler called her “brilliant, beautiful, extraordinary.”

Actor Steve Martin, who appeared alongside Keaton in Father of the Bride, fondly remembered her wit, sharing a humorous exchange from a past interview that captured her playful spirit.

Beyond acting, Keaton was admired for her distinctive fashion sense — particularly her love of turtlenecks, wide-brimmed hats, and bold glasses — a style she often wove into her characters.

The family has requested that fans wishing to honour Keaton’s memory make donations to local food banks or animal shelters, causes close to the actress’s heart.

Pneumonia, according to health authorities, is an infection of the lungs caused by bacteria, viruses, or fungi, posing a greater risk to older adults and those with underlying conditions.

Keaton leaves behind a lasting cinematic legacy defined by authenticity, charm, and an unmistakable individuality that reshaped Hollywood’s perception of the modern woman.
