DEWA Achieves Major Clean Energy Milestone with 1,000MW Addition

Post by : Bianca Hayes

The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has marked a significant milestone in Dubai’s clean energy sector by adding 1,000 megawatts (MW) of clean energy production capacity as of 2025. This achievement is part of the sixth phase of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, contributing to a total planned capacity of 1,800MW and demonstrating Dubai’s commitment to expanding renewable energy in accordance with international standards.

According to HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Managing Director and CEO of DEWA, this achievement is a direct reflection of DEWA’s dedication to the vision of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. He emphasized the aim of expediting the transition to renewable energy while fortifying Dubai’s role as a leader in sustainability and energy innovation worldwide.

Al Tayer elaborated that the initiative follows a structured long-term plan that ensures phased implementation. This strategy bolsters the reliability of Dubai’s energy infrastructure, allowing it to meet increasing demands from economic growth, urban expansion, and a rising population. Furthermore, the latest milestone greatly supports the UAE’s Net Zero 2050 Strategy and the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050, with the objective of achieving 100% energy production from clean sources by mid-century.

DEWA states that this advancement reinforces Dubai’s position as a pioneering global model in the transition toward a green economy driven by sustainability, innovation, and cutting-edge technology. It underscores DEWA’s rapid pace in enhancing its renewable energy initiatives, thereby increasing the clean energy share in the overall energy matrix and establishing a future-ready, efficient, and sustainable power generation framework.

Initiated in 2012 by HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park is a cornerstone project supporting the UAE’s long-term clean energy objectives. With this recent addition, the park's cumulative production capacity has now reached 3,860MW.

By 2030, the total capacity is projected to surpass 8,000MW, exceeding the initial goal of 5,000MW. This accelerated increase reflects Dubai’s expedited transition to clean energy, which is anticipated to reduce carbon emissions by over 8.5 million tonnes annually, thereby enhancing Dubai’s status as a center for green economic growth anchored in knowledge and innovation.

Moving forward, DEWA’s clean energy expansion is set to persist. In 2025, the authority is set to solicit bids for the seventh phase of the solar park, confirming that more capacity additions are underway. Additionally, the remaining 800MW of the sixth phase is expected to be completed and integrated into the grid by the fourth quarter of 2026.

With ongoing developments and substantial investments in renewable energy, Dubai is steadily progressing towards its goal of becoming a global leader in sustainable and future-ready energy production.
