Tragic Train Crash in Spain: Young Girl Survives Amid Loss

Post by : Bianca Hayes

In a heartbreaking incident, a six-year-old girl was remarkably discovered walking alone on railway tracks late Sunday night following a deadly high-speed train accident in southern Spain that resulted in the loss of her parents, brother, and cousin.

Though the child, whose name has yet to be revealed, sustained only a minor head injury, it was reported that her family was returning to their home in Aljaraque, close to Huelva on Spain’s Atlantic coastline.

The family had journeyed to Madrid as a celebration for the Epiphany holiday, where they attended a performance of The Lion King and visited the famed Bernabeu Stadium, according to Canal Sur.

Adrian Cano, the mayor of Aljaraque, referred to the girl's survival as “a miracle,” mentioning the deep grief that has enveloped the town, leaving residents at a loss for words.

Post-accident, a police officer provided care to the girl through the night until she was reunited with her grandmother in Cordoba, authorities revealed.

Her story is just one among many emerging from what stands as one of Europe’s most catastrophic train accidents, with families actively seeking missing loved ones via social media and local channels.

In another heartbreaking instance, a pregnant woman remains in critical condition. Alberto Garcia informed Antena 3 that his daughter, five months along, has sustained severe injuries and is currently on a ventilator, with doctors meticulously monitoring her unborn child, which still has a heartbeat.

Firefighters rescued her from the wreckage in an unconscious state after passengers were forced to break windows to escape. Her sister Ana, who was traveling with her and their dog, suffered minor wounds. The dog, Boro, is still unaccounted for, and Ana believes her sister was injured while trying to protect the pet.

The Spanish government has declared three days of national mourning. Meanwhile, high-speed rail operations between Madrid and Andalusia remain halted as investigators and rail safety experts thoroughly examine the accident site.

Local resident Julio Rodriguez, 16, assisted in rescuing victims after coincidentally passing the scene while returning from a fishing excursion. He later received appreciation from King Felipe during a visit to the region.

Authorities report that 47 individuals remain missing, with only 10 victims positively identified to date.

Families are still searching for answers, including the relatives of cardiologist Jesus Saldana, who has not been located among the injured or deceased. Although his mobile phone has been recovered, no further information regarding his whereabouts is available.
