Mild 2.8 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Delhi on Monday Morning

Post by : Mina Carter

On Monday morning, a mild earthquake of magnitude 2.8 on the Richter scale affected Delhi, as reported by the National Center for Seismology (NCS). The tremors were recorded around 8:44 am with the epicenter in North Delhi at a shallow depth of 5 kilometers.

The NCS provided details stating: "Earthquake of magnitude 2.8 occurred on 19/01/2026 at 08:44:16 IST, latitude 28.86 N, longitude 77.06 E, depth 5 km, location North Delhi."

This type of seismic activity is not unusual in Delhi, which is in Zone IV—a highly active seismic zone in India, classified as the second-highest risk area. Notably, the region has not witnessed any earthquake exceeding magnitude 5 in the last ten years.

Earlier this month, on January 13, a 3.5 magnitude quake also struck the Bageshwar district in Uttarakhand, nearby Kapkot town, prompting residents to evacuate their homes. Fortunately, officials reported no injuries or serious damages.

In recent times, the Delhi-NCR area has felt several moderate tremors, including a 4.1 magnitude quake in Haryana in 2022. While shallow, these quakes have resulted in little to no damage.

Residents are urged to stay calm but vigilant due to the area’s propensity for seismic activity. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation to ensure the safety of all.
