Anshul Sharma’s latest family dramedy, De De Pyaar De 2, marks a reunion of Ajay Devgn and R Madhavan following the hit Shaitaan last year. The film achieved its best single-day earnings on Sunday, pulling in ₹13.75 crore at the domestic box office, clearly up from Saturday’s ₹12.25 crore, which had already shown a notable 40% increase from its opening day earnings of ₹8.75 crore.
Closing its opening weekend at ₹34.75 crore in India, the film outshone the ₹24.75 crore debut of Son of Sardaar 2 released earlier this year. However, despite this robust start, Son of Sardaar 2 ultimately reached ₹46.82 crore after facing competition from Saiyaara.
While De De Pyaar De 2 boasts a stronger opening than some recent sequels by Devgn, it still falls short of the original De De Pyaar De, which kicked off with ₹39 crore (including paid previews) back in 2019 and crossed the ₹100 crore mark with a final total of ₹104.13 crore. It remains to be seen if this sequel can achieve similar success. Even exceeding ₹100 crore appears unlikely as its predecessor, Raid 2, soared to ₹173.05 crore, surpassing the first installment.
Furthermore, the film's opening weekend revenue is considerably less than the earlier collaboration of Devgn and Madhavan, Shaitaan, which gathered ₹54 crore in its initial weekend and ultimately achieved ₹148 crore during its theatrical release.
Looking ahead, De De Pyaar De 2 faces significant challenges from a slate of new releases in the coming weeks, including films like 120 Bahadur, Mastii 4, Tere Ishk Mein, Gustaakh Ishq, and Dhurandhar. Increased competition may impact its long-term box office performance.
