Mali pays tribute to Gen. Sadio Camara, whose death amidst rising militant threats raises questions
Shares of Vodafone Idea leapt nearly 10% in intraday trading Tuesday, after the Supreme Court signalled the Central government may revisit the telecom operator’s adjusted gross revenue (AGR) liabilities — a looming burden that has weighed heavily on the company’s finances for years.
The bench said the AGR matter rests within the Centre’s policy remit, effectively enabling officials to take a fresh look at the operator’s request for reassessment. Judges added there was "no impediment" for the Union government to decide appropriately, language that immediately lifted investor sentiment around the debt-pressed telco.
For Vodafone Idea, the decision offers a rare moment of relief. Any move toward trimming or reworking AGR claims could ease financial strain and create space for the company to stabilize operations and plan its next steps.
Notably, the government is reported to own roughly half of Vodafone Idea, positioning it as a direct participant in the company’s recovery. A softer AGR outcome would strengthen the balance sheet and potentially free capital for network investment and more competitive pricing — critical to narrowing the gap with rivals Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel.
The AGR dispute stretches back close to two decades, hinging on how telecom revenue should be calculated for licence fees and spectrum levies. In 2019, the Supreme Court ordered operators to pay based on total revenue, including non-core receipts, which prompted substantial claims from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT). Vodafone Idea has challenged those assessments, saying the additional ₹5,606 crore sought for periods up to FY2016–17 was wrongly worked out.
Previous pleas for reassessment had been delayed amid repeated adjournments. Tuesday’s remarks from the court, however, have reopened the possibility of a government re-examination — a development investors see as a potential turning point in Vodafone Idea’s long-running effort to regain footing. The market reaction reflected renewed belief that a resolution to the AGR saga may be closer than before.
