Coupang, the leading online retail platform in South Korea, announced on Thursday that all customer data compromised in a recent security breach has been removed. The company stated that the individual responsible did not distribute the data to others.
The former employee downloaded personal information concerning approximately 3,000 customers, a figure that represents a small fraction of Coupang's 33 million-member customer base. Subsequently, the employee deleted the data without transmitting it to third parties.
Coupang has named the former staff member involved but did not disclose additional details. The individual has confessed to actions surrounding the breach. Park Dae-jun, the CEO of Coupang, has issued a public apology, referring to the incident as a grave failure in safeguarding customer data.
Meanwhile, South Korea's Ministry of Science confirmed that investigations are underway. They emphasized that current claims made by Coupang have yet to be verified by official authorities. Criticism was directed towards the company for publicly discussing the matter prior to completing the investigation.
The Ministry is overseeing a collaborative investigative team that includes industry experts, seeking to uncover how the data access occurred, evaluate company system vulnerabilities, and ascertain the legality of the actions taken.
This breach is recognized as one of South Korea's most significant data security challenges in recent times. President Lee Jae Myung has urged harsher penalties against Coupang if found culpable of corporate negligence, especially given the company's U.S. listing.
The incident has sparked widespread concern regarding how major tech and retail companies secure personal data. As online retail grows, consumer expectations for data protection increase. The outcome of the investigation will be closely monitored and may usher in stricter data protection legislation in South Korea.
