Despite some moments of struggle on her serve, Gauff faced a brief setback, being broken at 5-2 in the second set. Yet, Rakhimova missed two crucial match points during her service game, allowing Gauff to seal the victory with a decisive backhand.
Having reached the semi-finals at Melbourne Park previously and finishing as a quarter-finalist last year, Gauff is set on claiming her third Grand Slam title.
In her next match, she will take on left-handed Olga Danilovic, who notably eliminated Venus Williams on the first day, in a bid for a place in the third round.
