Salman Khan’s Battle of Galwan Faces Backlash from Chinese Media, Indian Cinema Leaders Respond

Post by : Sean Carter

The teaser for Salman Khan’s impending film Battle of Galwan has ignited backlash from certain segments of Chinese media. However, representatives from India’s film sector assert that this response is neither unexpected nor alarming.

Released on December 27, the teaser showcases Salman Khan in a compelling role, inspired by the 2020 clash in Galwan Valley between Indian and Chinese forces. Shortly after its debut, the Chinese tabloid Global Times featured commentary from experts asserting that Bollywood's purpose is primarily entertainment and cannot alter historical truths. The report further highlighted that numerous Chinese netizens criticized the teaser.

Ashoke Pandit, Chief Advisor to the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE), stated that this backlash was anticipated. He elaborated that any film addressing the India-China tensions over Galwan would elicit a reaction from China.

Pandit asserted that Indian filmmakers have the right to narrate stories based on their nation's history and experiences. He emphasized that creating a film centered on the Galwan clash is entirely justified and that such reactions would not hinder the film's release or profitability. He further noted that producers likely anticipated such feedback, as the topic directly pertains to a delicate issue involving China.

According to Pandit, films like Battle of Galwan seek to convey India’s narrative to a global audience. He believes that China has posed numerous challenges for India and has backed forces opposed to Indian interests. Therefore, he views it as essential for Indian cinema to openly tell such stories. Moreover, he maintains that if the film resonates with viewers and is well-crafted, it will succeed irrespective of external criticism.

Directed by Apoorva Lakhia, Battle of Galwan is based on the book India’s Most Fearless 3. The film revisits the brutal confrontation that occurred in June 2020 in eastern Ladakh, where Indian and Chinese soldiers battled under extreme conditions with sticks and stones, as firearms were prohibited. The incident resulted in the death of Indian Army officer Colonel Bikkumalla Santosh Babu and other soldiers.

Salman Khan is reportedly portraying a character inspired by Colonel Santosh Babu, alongside co-star Chitrangda Singh. The film highlights themes of courage, sacrifice, and the stark challenges encountered by soldiers stationed in high-altitude regions.

While perspectives may vary across borders, the discourse surrounding Battle of Galwan has already captured significant attention. For many in India’s film domain, the backlash from Chinese media serves as a testament to how sensitive and impactful this subject remains, even years after the actual events transpired.
