On Friday, China declared sanctions against 20 American defense companies along with 10 senior executives due to the recent U.S. approval of a significant arms sale to Taiwan. Beijing criticized this move, asserting it infringes upon the “one-China principle” and undermines core agreements between the two nations.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry indicated that these sanctions are imposed under China’s Anti-Foreign Sanctions Law, taking immediate effect. It cautioned that any entities engaged in arms transactions with Taiwan will face strict repercussions. China interprets these sales as interference in domestic affairs and as a threat to its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Notable firms included in these sanctions encompass Northrop Grumman Systems Corporation, L3Harris Maritime Services, and Boeing, among others. As per the sanctions, all assets of these companies within China will be frozen. Additionally, Chinese entities and individuals will be barred from engaging in business dealings with the sanctioned companies.
The restrictions also apply to 10 high-ranking executives, such as Palmer Luckey, founder of Anduril Industries, alongside senior officials from L3Harris and VSE Corporation. These individuals will face constraints related to their activities in China.
This response follows the U.S. government's sanctioning of a major arms package to Taiwan, valued over $11 billion, featuring medium-range missiles, drones, and advanced weaponry. Taiwan has included five of these arms packages in a special defense budget amounting to around $39.85 billion, which awaits legislative approval.
China reiterated that no individual or nation should underestimate its commitment and capability to protect its sovereignty. The government vowed to react decisively to any provocations regarding Taiwan.
