Beijing Contributes $2.8M to Thailand Following Tragic Rail Incident

During a significant meeting at Government House on Thursday, the Chinese Ambassador to Thailand, Zhang Jianwei, delivered 20 million yuan ($2.8 million) in humanitarian assistance to Thailand after the tragic crane collapse on the Thai-Chinese high-speed rail project in Nakhon Ratchasima.

This aid package consists of 10 million yuan ($1.4 million) in cash and an equivalent amount in relief materials, which were graciously received by Prime Minister and Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul. Prime Minister Anutin expressed profound gratitude, describing the contribution as a testament to the “brotherly bond” and long-term trust shared between Thailand and China.

Ambassador Zhang conveyed Beijing’s heartfelt condolences regarding the accident, in which a construction crane fell onto a passenger train, resulting in several casualties. He assured that Chinese authorities had directed the involved companies to fully cooperate with Thai investigations and uphold transparency.

The ambassador further highlighted that the high-speed rail initiative is a crucial component of the Thailand-China strategic partnership, stressing that safety measures are now prioritized by all stakeholders.

The meeting also served as a platform to address broader economic collaboration. Prime Minister Anutin called upon China to expedite the procurement of 500,000 tonnes of Thai rice, a commitment previously established with President Xi Jinping. Ambassador Zhang responded positively, ensuring that China aims to fulfill the import goals within this year.

Tourism surfaced as another pivotal topic, with both leaders agreeing on strategies to boost Chinese tourism to Thailand, thereby aiding the country’s economic recovery and development.

The discussions underscored the mutual determination of both nations to strengthen relations, ensure safety in projects, and enhance trade and tourism collaboration, even in the aftermath of the recent incident.
