Recent findings from a government survey demonstrate a significant change in public perceptions regarding national security in Japan. For the first time, the growing military capabilities of China have surpassed concerns regarding North Korea’s nuclear arsenal.
The survey reveals that 68% of participants view China's military buildup and its maneuvers near Japan and in the South China Sea as their primary worry, up from 61% in a similar survey conducted three years prior. This surge in concern signifies an increasing public anxiety regarding China's influence in the region.
Initiated in early November, the survey coincided with remarks from Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi that escalated tensions with Beijing. She suggested that Japan might mobilize its forces if China's actions regarding Taiwan posed a threat to Japan's survival. In response, China issued a strong condemnation and called for the withdrawal of her statements.
Beijing has advised its citizens to reconsider travel to Japan and hinted at limiting exports of crucial rare earth materials, essential for various modern technologies. Moreover, Chinese military drills near Japan and major exercises around Taiwan featuring missiles, naval vessels, and aircraft have further escalated anxieties.
Additionally, the poll indicated unprecedented support for the Japan Self-Defense Forces, with a remarkable 94% of respondents expressing a positive opinion of the military. This reflects a growing trust among the populace in their armed forces amidst rising regional tensions.
The Japanese government is gearing up to refine its defense strategy, with expectations to further elevate military expenditures as part of its plan to double defense spending to 2% of GDP. Despite restrictions imposed by Japan's post-war constitution preventing offensive military actions, the nation remains one of the largest defense spenders worldwide.
China has criticized Japan's defense initiatives, alleging that Tokyo is exacerbating regional discord and has cautioned Japan against interfering in the Taiwan matter, which it considers a domestic issue.
This survey underscores a shifting security paradigm in Japan, revealing how increasing power struggles in East Asia are influencing public sentiment and shaping the nation’s approach to future security challenges.
