Canada unveils new border security plans, controversial powers included

Post by : Mina Carter

The federal government is set to announce new border security measures today. Prime Minister Mark Carney will visit a Niagara border facility, followed by a news conference from Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree.

The Liberal government recently split its border security bill to fast-track some measures while allowing more scrutiny for controversial ones. The bill includes expanding the coast guard’s role, tightening the immigration and refugee system, improving sex offender data sharing, and stronger controls on chemicals used in illicit drugs.

Contentious provisions giving authorities broader powers to access personal information and search mail remain, drawing opposition from civil society groups.
