Canada Urges Ceasefire Amid Rising Tensions In Lebanon

Canada has called for an immediate ceasefire and stronger protection of civilians amid rising tensions in Lebanon. In a statement, Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand emphasized the importance of respecting international law and ensuring the safety of civilians on all sides of the conflict.

The statement urged Israel to respect Lebanon’s territorial integrity, while also calling on Hezbollah to disarm and follow decisions made by the Lebanese government. Canada stressed that both sides must commit to a permanent ceasefire to prevent further escalation and loss of life.

Minister Anand strongly condemned recent Israeli airstrikes across Lebanon, including strikes in Beirut, which reportedly caused civilian casualties and damage to infrastructure. At the same time, she also condemned Hezbollah’s attacks targeting Israel, describing them as indiscriminate and harmful to civilians.

Canada reiterated its support for the Lebanese government’s efforts to restore full authority within its borders. This includes addressing the presence of armed groups such as Hezbollah, which Canada designates as a terrorist organization, and working toward long-term stability.

The statement also highlighted the need for a diplomatic solution to the ongoing tensions. Canada called for renewed international efforts to achieve a durable and peaceful resolution, while stressing that Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity must be respected.

The remarks reflect Canada’s broader position on the conflict, focusing on de-escalation, civilian protection, and the importance of dialogue to resolve regional disputes.
