The governments of Canada and Quebec have announced new progress in their joint effort to expand affordable housing, with plans to build 77 new housing units across three communities. The announcement was made by Gregor Robertson along with representatives from the Quebec government, highlighting a shared commitment to increasing housing supply and supporting vulnerable populations.

The new units are part of a broader collaboration under a Memorandum of Understanding between both governments, aimed at accelerating residential construction across Quebec. Officials confirmed that nearly 865 affordable housing units are being supported under this partnership, with a total investment of approximately $200 million.

The three newly approved projects will focus on addressing the needs of specific groups, including independent seniors, individuals facing difficult social or economic conditions, and women and children affected by domestic violence. The total cost of these projects is estimated at more than $37 million, reflecting a combined effort by federal, provincial, and community partners.

One of the key projects is led by Coopérative de solidarité Au cœur des Collines in Saint-Calixte, which will build 28 housing units for independent seniors. Another major development, the Collectif Amélie Fristel project in Joliette, will create 38 housing units, including both permanent and transitional housing for people with disabilities, those experiencing homelessness, or at risk of becoming homeless.

A third project, led by Maison d’Ariane, will provide 11 housing units desidgne specifically for women and children who are survivors of domestic violence. The project aims to offer a safe and supportive environment to help residents rebuild their lives.

Funding for these initiatives is being provided jointly by the federal and provincial governments through programs such as the Quebec Affordable Housing Program and Build Canada Homes. Community organizations are playing a central role in delivering these projects, ensuring that housing solutions are tailored to local needs.

Officials say the initiative will not only improve access to safe and affordable housing but also strengthen communities by supporting those most in need. The partnership reflects a coordinated approach to tackling housing challenges while promoting inclusive and sustainable development across Quebec.
