Lai has spent five years in custody awaiting the trial and now faces the prospect of life imprisonment.
Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Anita Anand, expressed deep concern over the erosion of rights, freedoms, and Hong Kong’s autonomy, calling Lai’s prosecution “politically driven.”
Family members say Lai’s health has deteriorated significantly during his solitary confinement. His daughter Claire emphasized that her father’s focus is now solely on reuniting with family and living peacefully.
