Deadly Bushfires Sweep Australia & New Zealand, Homes Destroyed

Emergency crews were called to bushland near Bulahdelah, 200 km north of Sydney, after a tree fell on a man, causing a fatal cardiac arrest. The 59-year-old died at the scene, highlighting the extreme dangers faced by emergency workers.

Over the weekend, a fast-moving fire tore through New South Wales’ Central Coast, destroying 16 homes in a densely populated region north of Sydney. Residents described frantic attempts to save their homes from advancing flames.

One resident said her husband tried desperately to put out the fire, but “everything’s in it: his grandmother’s belongings, his mother’s, all my stuff – it’s all gone.”

Although conditions eased overnight, some inland towns are expected to reach temperatures above 40°C (104°F), raising fire risks. More than 50 bushfires continue to burn across New South Wales.

In Tasmania, a 700-hectare blaze at Dolphin Sands destroyed 19 homes and damaged 40 more. The fire has been contained, but residents are warned not to return due to ongoing hazards.

Authorities have predicted a high-risk bushfire season across Australia this summer, following years of relatively low fire activity, with extreme heat expected to fuel more outbreaks.

Meanwhile, in New Zealand, crews fought a fire near Tongariro National Park, spreading to 110 hectares. Road closures and delays were reported, as the blaze follows a wildfire last month that burned 2,589 hectares of alpine bush.

These fires in both countries underscore the growing threat of extreme weather, putting communities and emergency responders at continued risk.
