The facility where Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro is currently incarcerated is considered one of the most controversial jails in the U.S.
Known as the Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) Brooklyn, this jail, which opened in the early 1990s, currently accommodates approximately 1,300 inmates. It often serves as the initial point of detention for individuals awaiting federal trial in New York, including those charged with drug trafficking, organized crime, and financial misconduct.
Following Maduro’s arrest, Venezuelan nationals celebrated outside the detention center as a convoy, reportedly carrying Maduro and his spouse, drove in late Saturday night.
MDC Brooklyn has housed various high-profile inmates in the past, featuring notable figures such as music industry icons R. Kelly and Sean “Diddy” Combs, crypto mogul Sam Bankman-Fried, and Ghislaine Maxwell, a member of Jeffrey Epstein’s circle.
This isn't the first time a former global leader has been detained there; Juan Orlando Hernández, the former president of Honduras, was also held at this facility on U.S. drug trafficking allegations, ending with a conviction resulting in a 45-year prison sentence, later commuted by former U.S. President Donald Trump.
Despite its proximity to a shopping district and views of the Statue of Liberty, the jail has developed a notorious reputation. Legal representatives and inmates have described it as a site marked by violence, neglect, and hazardous conditions. In 2024 alone, two inmates lost their lives within its walls, while multiple staff members faced charges connected to corruption.
A troubling incident occurred in 2019, when a power outage left inmates deprived of heat and light for nearly a week during winter.
In light of increasing scrutiny, the Federal Bureau of Prisons asserts that conditions are improving. Officials mention enhanced staffing, resolution of numerous maintenance issues, upgrades to utilities, and a reduction in inmate populations as factors contributing to decreased crime and contraband.
Nevertheless, concerns persist.
While in detention, Maduro could encounter familiar figures like Hugo Carvajal, a former prominent Venezuelan intelligence officer who has since turned against him and is cooperating with U.S. authorities. Other inmates reportedly include alleged members of Venezuela’s Tren de Aragua gang, notorious for violent acts across the United States.
The facility continues to face scrutiny since 2021 when another New York federal jail was closed after Jeffrey Epstein’s death raised significant worries regarding safety and oversight within the federal prison system.
